It’s a tale as old as time: the showdown between the two undisputed champions of the sweet treat beverage world. In one corner you have the classic milkshake with its thick, creamy texture it gets from the ice cream. In the other you have frappes with their light, frothy body in an unlimited range of flavours. Both are just as delicious as the other, but lets break it down so YOU can choose a champion.
Milkshakes:
A word that everyone is familiar with, but what actually makes this drink so iconic?
Simplicity is key when it comes to making this beverage, as many people tend to overcomplicate it (or even end up making something else entirely). The classic thick, rich and creamy drink that we know only has a few components, ice cream and milk! Obviously toppings are optional (compulsory personally lol) but it really is that simple. This treat tends to come in the classic flavours you’d associate with ice cream such as vanilla, strawberry, banana and chocolate, as this is the staple ingredient needed to make it. However as ice cream flavours are becoming more adventurous, so are our milkshakes, with flavours such as caramel, Nutella and many more! This is where we start to blur the line with our competitor..
Frappes:
Same concept, just a little more to it.
Frappes have gained a lot of momentum in the recent years due to the diversity in which they can be created. Your standard frappe will consist of coffee, milk, sugar and ice. However this has been adapted to suit the coffee shop culture, now being able to customise your drink with endless possibilities thanks to the help of thousands of flavouring syrups and toppings. Don’t be fooled though, it may sound like a lot, but as this is blended with ice and milk, it is a surprisingly light and frothy drink, perfect for a quick treat in the warm weather. Frappes are all about the presentation as well, always being served with helpings of decadent sauces and topped with plenty of whipped cream to create a truly delicious work of art in a to-go cup.
